Hurricane Ian: Here’s where you can get sandbags in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Florida counties are starting to release information about sandbag availability Hurricane Ian looms in the Caribbean.

Hurricane Ian is expected to impact the state this week.

Orange County

Orange County Public Works is offering self-serve sandbags starting this Saturday.

Sandbags will be distributed at five locations: Barnett Park, Downey Park, Bithlo Community Park, West Orange Recreation and Meadow Woods Park. The sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Each location will be provided with unfilled sandbags and several large sand piles. Residents will need to bring their own shovel or spade for filling their sandbags.

People will need to show a valid ID with an Orange County address to get the bags. They will be provided 10 unfilled sandbags.

For individuals needing special assistance, please contact 311 and detailed information will be provided on securing sandbags.

Winter Park

In preparation for the inclement weather, city residents can pick up sandbags: Monday, Sept. 26, and Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ward Park & Showalter Field Parking Lot located at 288 Perth Lane. Enter site via Perth Lane. There is a limit of eight per resident or business owner within the city limits. Please bring proof of residency driver’s license, valid ID or utility bill statement. Please be prepared for a Fill It Yourself model with the city providing shovels, bags and sand on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are physically unable, city staff will be available to assist those in need.

Seminole County

Seminole County announced Friday that a site will be open to offer sandbags for residents looking to prepare for possible impacts and flooding from the storm system.

The sandbag sited will be at:

Boombah Seminole County Sports Overflow Lot at 3450 E. Lake Mary Boulevard in Sanford from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Red Bug Lake Park, located at 3600 Red Bug Lake Road in Casselberry, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Seminole COunty Softball Complex, located at 2200 North Street, Altamonte Springs, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be up to 15 empty bags available per household. More information can be found by visiting PrepareSeminole.org or calling 407-665-0000.

Altamonte Springs

Altamonte Springs will provide self-service sand and bag operations for city residents starting Sunday, Sept. 25, while supplies last.

The bags will be available at Eastmonte Park, located at 830 Magnolia Drive, off S. Ronald Reagan Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Westmonte Recreation Center, located at 624 Bills Lane, off Spring Oaks Blvd.), from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

An additional sandbag location will open at the Softball Complex on Monday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. and will operate from that point on from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents must bring their shovels as this is a self-service operation. Each household is limited to 10 bags. Park rangers will be on-site between 3 and 7 p.m. for those who require assistance.

Oviedo

The city of Oviedo will offer self-service sandbags on Monday, Sept. 26, and Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Evans Street Public Works Compound located at 1725 Evans St. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents are urged to bring gloves and shovels to get their 15 bags per household.

Brevard County

Sand is being provided by Brevard County Public Works and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will have supervised inmate work crews filling and loading sandbags for residents. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle.

o Mitchell Ellington Park, 577 Hall Road in Merritt Island, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

o Wickham Park, located at 2500 Parkway Drive in Melbourne, will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

o Eastern Florida State College, located at 250 Community College Parkway SE, will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

o Chain of Lakes, located at 2300 Truman Scarborough Way in Titusville, will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Volusia County

Volusia County will provide free sand and empty sandbags to residents from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the parking lot of the Volusia County Correctional Facility, 1354 Indian Lake Road, Daytona Beach.

Osteen

  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the Public Works facility, 200 State Road 415, Osteen
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Public Works facility, 200 State Road 415, Osteen

Daytona Beach

Sandbag supplies will be available for Daytona Beach residents and business owners from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the parking lot near the southeast corner of Orange Avenue and Jean Street. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels. There is no charge for sandbags and there is a 10-bag limit per vehicle.

Daytona Beach Shores

The city of Daytona Beach Shores will offer sandbag distribution this weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice at the Shores Community Center, 3000 Bellemead Drive, Daytona Beach Shores, just west of City Hall. The city will have bags, sand and shovels, but residents need to fill their own bags. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per household/business and proof of residency is required.

DeBary

The city of DeBary will distribute sandbags at City Hall, 16 Colomba Road. Sandbags will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, and Tuesday, Sept. 27. There is a limit of 10 bags per household, while supplies last. Proof of DeBary residency is required, i.e. driver’s license. Households only, no commercial businesses. Residents will be responsible for bringing their own shovels and filling their own sandbags.

DeLand

A self-service sandbag station will open at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Melching Field parking lot at the corner of East Hubbard Avenue and South Woodland Boulevard. Sand and bags will be on-site as well as limited shovels. Sandbags will be limited to DeLand residents only, so please bring your ID. There will be a limit of 10 bags per household.

Deltona

The city of Deltona will set up sandbag filling stations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at 191 Howland Blvd. (also known as Festival Park). Residents must provide proof of residence and fill their own sandbags. Residents are asked to bring shovels to help expedite the sandbag filling and it is recommended to bring a helper – one to hold the bags and one to fill the bags. Please note, there is a limit of 10 bags per household.

Edgewater

The city of Edgewater has stocked three locations throughout the city with sand piles: Fire Station 57, located at 2628 Hibiscus Drive; Mango Tree Lake, located at 901 Mango Tree Drive; and Airpark staging area, located at 1898 Airpark Road.

The sand piles are accessible 24 hours a day. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels and bags.

Holly Hill

Holly Hill residents may pick up sandbags from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Public Works lot on 10th Street at the railroad tracks. Residents must show proof of identification. There is a 10 bag limit. Please bring your own shovel.

New Smyrna Beach

The city of New Smyrna Beach will provide sandbags to residents at Sports Complex football stadium, located at 2335 Sunset Drive.

The distribution will be on the following days:

Monday, Sept. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City staff will be there to help distribute 10 pre-filled sandbags at the stadium’s north vehicle loop or 15 fillable bags at a sand pile in the field, south of the main entrance.

Residents must provide proof of residence and those who are filling their own bags need to bring their own shovel.

Oak Hill

The city of Oak Hill will offer sand and bags from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 234 S. U.S. Highway 1. Residents must provide proof of residency, bring their own shovel and fill their own bags. There is a limit of 10 bags per household.

Orange Ctut

Ormond Beach

The city of Ormond Beach has a self-serve sand pile and fillable sandbags at the Nova Community Center, located at 440 N. Nova Road.

Self-serve sand hours are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Ormond Beach residents can receive up to 10 complimentary fillable bags from the Nova Recreation Center office during the hours listed above. Residents will need to bring a shovel and fill/load the bags into their vehicles.

Ponce Inlet

The Town of Ponce Inlet will provide sand and sandbags at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26 and Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Ponce Inlet Community Center, 4670 S. Peninsula Drive, until it’s gone. Hurricane passes will also be available. Residents should bring a shovel and be prepared to fill their own bags. There is a limit of 10 bags per resident, and identification is required.

Port Orange

The city of Port Orange will provide bags and sand for residents from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on following days at these sites:

  • Coraci Sports Complex, 5200 Coraci Blvd.
  • Spruce Creek Recreational Facility, 6040 Central Park Blvd.
  • Airport Road Park, 6751 Airport Road
  • Port Orange Adult Center, 4790 Ridgewood Ave.

Residents must provide proof of residency and are allowed to fill up to 10 bags. They should bring their own shovels and are responsible for filling the bags themselves. Assistance will be provided.

South Daytona

Sand and sandbags will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 and Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Piggotte Community Center, 504 Big Tree Road. The city will provide bags, sand and shovels. Residents must provide proof of South Daytona residency, and each resident may fill 25 bags. If you have any questions, call Public Works at 386-322-3080.

Osceola County

Cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud

Osceola County will have a sandbag distribution location on Monday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Osceola Heritage Park.

The park is located at 1211 Shakerag Road in Kissimmee.

The county will provide bags and sand, but residents will need to bring their own shovel or filling tool. Supplies will be limited and available for filling on a first-come, first-served basis.

There is a limit of 25 sandbags per household.

Lake County

Lake County will have five locations available for residents to pick up sandbags starting Sunday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

o Astor Area: 23023 State Road 40, Astor

o East Lake Sports and Community Complex: 24809 Wallick Road, Sorrento

o P.E.A.R. Park: 26701 US Hwy 27, Leesburg

o North Lake Regional Park: 40730 Roger Giles Road, Umatilla

o Minneola Athletic Complex: 1300 Fosgate Road, Minneola

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per household. Residents need to bring their own shovels and are responsible for filling their own bags.

Sandbags will only be offered before the storm.

The city of Clermont will also open a sandbag site Sunday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Park Ballfields, located at 658 12th Street.

Residents will also need to bring their own shovels and fill their own bags. Only 10 sandbags will be provided per household.

Sumter County

Sumter County will have self-service sand and sandbags available at the Lake Panasoffkee Regional Recreation Park, 1589 CR 459, Lake Panasoffkee, FL starting today at 10:00 AM and through regular working hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM until further notice.To obtain the sand and sandbags, residents will need to provide proof of residence within Sumter County and should bring a shovel if they have one. Residents pick up sandbags, fill them, and place them in their vehicles. There is a ten (10) sandbag limit per vehicle.

Flagler County

Flagler County is offering sandbags through Tuesday at:

  • Flagler Technical College, A1A
  • Fire Station 71, CR 2006
  • Palm Coast Public Works, Wellfield Grade
  • Daytona State College - Palm Coast, PC Parkway
  • Indian Trails Sports Complete, Belle Terre Parkway
  • Santa Maria Del Mar Church, Central Ave.
