According to KABC, a woman and her two dogs were killed by a lightning strike while they were on their morning walk Wednesday in Pico Rivera, California.

Pico Rivera City Manager Steve Carmona told KABC that the woman was found dead on the path with her dogs.

KCBS said the woman has not yet been identified due to the ongoing investigation and notifying next of kin.

City officials have encouraged crews, summer camps and more to stay indoors until the storm passes, according to KCBS. The current storm originated in Baja, California and brought monsoon-like conditions to southern California.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, according to KCBS, that the odds of being struck by lightning in a year or so is one in a million.

“About 40 million lightning strikes hit the ground in the United States each year. But the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are less than one in a million, and almost 90% of all lightning strike victims survive. The odds of being struck multiple times is even less, with the record being seven times in one lifetime. There are some factors that can put you at greater risk for being struck, such as participating in outdoor recreational activities or working outside,” said the CDC, according to KCBS.

According to KTTV, the last lightning strike death in southern California was in 2014, whena 20-year-old man was struck and killed.
