Water hazard: Billy Horschel slips on grass at Masters, recovers to make par

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The greens are notoriously fast and slick at Augusta National during Masters week. Apparently, so are the approaches to the green.

Billy Horschel took an embarrassing slide down a hill to the grassy bank at No. 13 during Saturday’s third round, turning his white pants green, Golf Digest reported. Now he is going to be the butt of golfing jokes.

Horschel, 34, hit his tee shot into the pine straw off the right side of the fairway then played his second shot into a tributary of Rae’s Creek in front of the green.

With his ball fully submerged, Horschel decided not to take a drop. After taking off his golf spikes and rolling up his pants to his knees, the six-time winner on the PGA Tour walked up to the green to check the distance to the pin. When he started back toward his ball, Horschel, still barefoot, lost his balance and slid, to the amusement of the gallery and playing partner Phil Mickelson.

“I thought it was worse,” Horschel told reporters after his round, “I said (to Mickelson), ‘How bad is it? How bad is that grass stain going to be?’

“He said, ‘There may not be one there,’ and he looked and said, ‘Yeah, there’s one there. Sorry, buddy.’ Obviously, that’s going to be a highlight that’s played on social media or maybe Augusta or the Masters will take it off.”

No chance. It’s all over the internet.

“That wet rye makes a difference,” Mickelson told reporters.

“I was hoping to make the putt so at least it would be something funny from it,” Horschel said after his round.

Horschel was able to regain his composure and two-putted for par. He finished his third round at 1-over-par 73 and was at 4-over-par 220 after three rounds.
