Si Woo Kim uses 3-wood on greens after breaking putter during second round of Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Drive for show, putt for dough. Break your putter? Oh, no.

Augusta National is already a tough place to putt with its fast greens, but Si Woo Kim put himself in a tougher spot when he broke his putter during a flash of anger during the second round of the Masters on Friday. That forced him to use a 3-wood for the final four holes of the second round, Golf Digest reported.

But call it Kim-possible: the 21-year-old is still in contention, trailing leader Justin Rose by three strokes and tied for sixth place after 36 holes in one of professional golf’s most prestigious tournaments.

Kim broke his club after a poor chip on the par-5 15th hole in Friday, smashing it into the turf and bending the shaft, Sports Illustrated reported. That came after a three-putt at No. 14.

Forced to use a different club, Kim pulled out his 3-wood and two-putted for par, Golf Digest reported. He then made routine two-putts on the final three holes to finish with a 3-under-par 69 and a two-day total of 4-under-par 140.

“Just frustration, like 14, 15 chip,” Kim told reporters after his round. “That’s not on purpose, but it was broken, yeah.”

Kim two-putted at No. 15 to save par and missed a 12-footer for birdie at the 16th hole before tapping in for par. At No. 17, Kim two-putted from 30 feet from the hold to save par, and finished his round with -- you guessed it -- two putts for par.

Kim said he chose the 3-wood over a sand wedge, which some players prefer when they do not have a putter.

“I think sand wedge (is) harder and hard to ... control,” Kim told reporters.

Rose is leading the tournament at 7-under-par after shooting even-par 72 Friday after opening with a 65 in Round 1.

Kim’s best finish at the Masters came in 2019 when he tied for 21st place, Sports Illustrated reported.

Luckily for Kim, he can replace the putter for Saturday’s third round, Golf Digest reported.

But he got tired of answering questions about his angry moment.

“I don’t want to answer any more,” Kim told reporters. “Sorry.”
