Prince Philip honored with 41-gun salutes

Military leaders fired cannons and guns across the United Kingdom, aboard warships at sea and in Australia Saturday to honor Prince Philip, a former naval officer and husband to Queen Elizabeth II who died Friday.

Forces in London, Cardiff and Belfast started a 41-gun salute at one-minute intervals starting around midday, the BBC reported. In Australia, the Australian Defense Force made its salute around 5 p.m. outside the Parliament House in Canberra.

New Zealand planned a tribute for Sunday.

The public also left flowers in front of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle on Saturday.
