Posthumous album expected later this year from ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ rapper Coolio

Coolio, a rapper and actor whose hits included “Gangsta’s Paradise,” died last September but some of the music he had been working on before his death is set to be released.

Coolio’s estate is expected to release a studio album later this year, according to The Associated Press. Coolio had been working on the album in the days leading up to his death.

Coolio died in September at the age of 59, according to Rolling Stone. Coolio died from cardiac arrest, the AP reported.

The album is called “Long Live Coolio” and will be Coolio’s first posthumous album, the AP reported. The first single featuring Too $hort and DJ Wino, “TAG ‘You It,’” was released Friday.

The music video and song for “TAG ‘You It’” was presumably done before Coolio died as he made an appearance in the video, Rolling Stone said.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper was born Artis Leon Ivey Jr. on Aug. 1, 1963, in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Compton, California, Rolling Stone reported.

In California, Coolio cut his first single in the late 1980s. He later joined WC and the Maad Circle and contributed to their debut album, “Ain’t a Damn Thang Changed.”

His career rose with the 1994 release of his debut album, “It Takes a Thief,” according to the AP. The album’s first opening track, “Fantastic Voyage,” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Coolio’s big break came when the following year, when he recorded “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the 1995 film, “Dangerous Minds,” which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Variety reported. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for three weeks and was named the No. 1 single of 1995. the entertainment news outlet reported.

His album sales reached 4.8 million with 978 million song streams, Luminate said, according to the AP. He was nominated for six Grammys.

Coolio starred in a parenting reality show called “Coolio’s Rules,” was a voice for the animated show, “Gravity Falls,” and performed the “Kenan & Kel” theme song for the Nickelodeon show, according to the AP.
