Former supermodel Linda Evangelista claims CoolSculpting procedure left her ‘brutally disfigured’

Former runway icon Linda Evangelista revealed recently that she underwent a cosmetic surgery procedure that she claimed has left her “unrecognizable” and “brutally disfigured.”

Specifically, the supermodel said in an Instagram post: “To my followers who have wondered why I have not been working while my peers’ careers have been thriving, the reason is that I was brutally disfigured by Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting procedure which did the opposite of what it promised.”

Marketed as a non-surgical method for targeting fat cells, CoolSculpting freezes fat cells so that they eventually break down, “Good Morning America” reported. Meanwhile, the FDA-approved procedure has been performed more than 8 million times, according to the company’s website.

Evangelista’s personal account contradicted the company’s claims.

“(CoolSculpting) increased, not decreased, my fat cells and left me permanently deformed even after undergoing two painful, unsuccessful, corrective surgeries. I have been left, as the media has described, unrecognizable,” she wrote in her post.

In turn, the 90s catwalk fixture is suing Zeltiq Aesthetics, the maker of CoolSculpting, for $50 million, alleging that the procedure caused her disfigurement, pain and suffering, severe emotional distress and that she sustained economic losses as it rendered her “unemployable,” GMA reported.

According to the lawsuit, Evangelista had seven treatments by a dermatologist to break down fat cells in her “abdomen, flanks, back and bra area, inner thighs, and chin,” Within months, however, she developed a condition known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH, which causes firm tissue masses in treated areas, The Washington Post reported.

Daniel Maman, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in New York who has performed the procedure for about five years, told the newspaper that it “definitively” works.

“The cells actually die and are ingested by the body,” Maman said.

Dr. Jonathan Zelken, CEO of Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine, told GMA that CoolSculpting is “probably” the top non-surgical fat-reduction technology in the world and that PAH is an “exceedingly rare” complication.
