3-year-old nephew dies days after aunt allegedly pushed him into Lake Michigan

CHICAGO — 3-year-old Josiah Brown died Sunday, almost a week after his aunt allegedly pushed him off a Chicago pier into the water.

Prosecutors said that Brown was pushed into Lake Michigan by Victoria Moreno, 34, on Monday. She allegedly stood by as he sank to the lake bottom of Chicago’s Navy Pier.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, it took divers 30 minutes to find the boy at the bottom of the lake.

The 3-year-old went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital in “very critical condition,” officials told The Associated Press.

Brown died Sunday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Moreno faces felony charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a child under 13, causing permanent disability, Chicago police said.

The charges will likely escalate now that the 3-year-old has died, WLS said Sunday.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Susanna Ortiz denied bail for Moreno on Wednesday. Her defense argued that Moreno suffers from mental issues.

The judge described her alleged actions as “intentionally brutal and heinous” in the hearing, AP reported.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with medical expenses.
