The Los Angeles Fire Department said in a news release that the students were evaluated at Van Nuys Middle School for a suspected overdose and “found to be in mild-to-moderate distress.” Seven of the students were taken to local hospitals and three were released at the scene.

In the news release, fire officials emphasized that crews at the scene confirmed that the incident was not fentanyl-related. Officials did not offer any further details but said that “specifics of the medical complaints and possible substance(s) will be completed by hospital personnel.”

“This is not any sort of fentanyl-affiliated overdose. We want to make sure everybody knows that,” Erik Scott of the LAFD told KABC.

In a statement to CNN, the Los Angeles Unified School District said it could not confirm what substance was consumed, and that medical assistance was requested out of “an abundance of caution.”

Officials at the scene told KTLA the substance could potentially be cannabis.

A total of 50 firefighters rushed to the scene to treat the students shortly after 10:30 a.m. Thursday, KCBS reported. Crews searched the campus to ensure all students were accounted for.
